Online games

Online casinos

There are a large number of online casinos where people can play casino games such as Roulette, Blackjack, Craps and many others. These games are played against the "house", which makes money due to the fact that the odds are slightly in its favor. Some unscrupulous websites have been found to offer rich games that are less mathematically fair than they seem.

Online poker

There are a large number of online poker rooms that offer various poker games, most often Texas hold 'em, but also Omaha, seven-card stud and other game types. Players play against each other, with the "house" making its money through the "grate".

Online sports betting

Several major bookmakers offer fixed odds betting on the Internet, where gamblers typically bet on the results of sporting events.
A relatively new internet innovation is the betting exchange, which allows individuals to place bets with each other (with the "house" taking a small commission).

Transfers of funds

Gamblers typically upload money to the online gaming company, make bets or play the games it offers, and then pay out any winnings. European gamblers can often fund game accounts with credit or debit cards and pay out winnings directly back to the card.
However, due to the questionable legality of online gambling in the United States, it is often the case that U.S. credit cards are not accepted. However, a number of intermediary companies - such as Firepay, Neteller and Moneybookers - offer accounts with which (among other things) online games can be financed. Casino operators and online poker rooms often offer incentives to use these 'alternative payment methods'.

General legal issues

Online gambling is legal and regulated in many countries, including the United Kingdom and several nations in and around the Caribbean.
The United States federal appeals court has ruled that the Federal Wire Act prohibits the electronic transmission of information to sports betting across state lines. There is no law prohibiting games of any other kind.
Some states have specific laws against online gambling of all kinds. It would also be illegal to own an online gaming operation without proper licensing, and no states currently license online gaming.
The government of the island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, which licenses internet-old businesses, filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization over the actions of the US government to prevent online gambling.
